Disinfection Dysfunction: The Pitfalls and Perils to Choosing and Using a Disinfectant

COVID-19 has changed the general public’s attitude toward infection prevention.  The media loves to sensationalize outbreaks and the prevalence of sharing both accurate and misleading information on social media has become the norm.  Prior to COVID-19, most patients did not put much thought into what happens behind the scenes when they chose a healthcare provider. As experts we know all too well that improperly cleaned and disinfected surfaces and equipment can lead to adverse events.    Disinfectants are the first line of defense against pathogens wanting to wage war on your clinic. Over the past several years there has been a paradigm shift to consider the cause and effect of improper cleaning techniques and under educated staff.

At the end of the seminar, by using the concept of Disinfection Dysfunction along with peer reviewed literature, participants will be able to: identify the desired traits of disinfectants, develop a greater understanding of disinfectant product labels, ensure that the method of application will meet the clinic’s needs and delve into practices for using disinfectants to minimize occupational health and safety concerns.
